Unbelievable that over all the years we have been in and out and lived in Sierra Leone, I have never been here before. It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places of the greater Freetown area. You do need a special permission letter to enter the plant.

Which we obtained and with a picnic basket, walking shoes and friends we spent a wonderful day at the plant.

Marveling at Gods creation, wondering if it is “spring time or fall” As at one site the lambs are being born (spring) and at the other side the leaves are falling down (fall).

In the midst of the “confusion” we enjoyed it all.

Kabala - a town in the North of Sierra Leone

thumb_kabala_058thumb_kabala_007Kabala about 6 hours drive on an almost great road! Five of the New Steps staff members were going “up-line” for an assessment trip working alongside the Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) organization in Kabala. This is a great town in the North surrounded by mountains. As Rene had never joined the New Steps teams on one of their overnight trips this was a great opportunity, so Monday morning we packed the Landcruiser, drove to Waterloo, where the new Steps facility is located, packed up some wheelchairs, crutches etc. and off we went. We arrived before dark in Kabala met the team and went to a guest house. Then off to dinner to one of the few eating places in town. Choices for the evening menu were fried chicken with chips, chips with fried chicken, fried chicken with salad, or salad with fried chicken. Hmmm what should we order?

Thought for the day

When there is nothing left but God,

That is when you find out that God is all you need.

Live today to the fullest, because tomorrow is not promised.

September update
on_our_way_to_workSeptember 21, 2008 Dear friends,  Greetings from Freetown, the rainy season is still not totally gone and there are days that the rain is so heavy that walking from the gate to the centre gets you drenched. The sad part also is that only two weeks ago the rain was so heavy that some little ones drowned during the storm. One of the little kids was a cousin from one of our nurses.  Daily we are confronted that life and dead are reality for every person here. If we think about this too long we can get discouraged. Regularly we expats (expat means, foreigner, because that is what we are) ... look at each other and shake our heads and ask: “will it ever change?" . .. Do you want an honest answer?

Joshua continues

 thumb_passport_photo_joshua_aug2008

After weeks of going back and forth to the ministry and the children’s home still no news, so we decided to pick up the phone once again and ask if there was any news. Well not really ….. we just have to be patient, after all this is Africa. However the same afternoon we get a phone call from the caretaker’s family that somebody had come to talk to Joshua and see the place.....

Today I was reminded of
A co-worker/ friend, who died a long time ago but has left an impact forever, once said: "It is not crossing the sea, but seeing the cross that will make you a missionary". What a wisdom in these words. Having sailed for many years and now living landbased.... what a truth! We all have a job to do no matter where we are placed. With this I want to thank all our family and friends who over all these years have been there for us. These words spoken so long ago will always point me back to the One who created me and remind me "why I am doing what I am doing!".

Every Child matters
thumb_henry-thA few years ago, when we were still involved with outreach opportunities for young people, one of the songs we would use was: "Every Child Matters to Me". Well this is still the case.... One of the programs offered here in Sierra Leone is is "Integrate to educate"....  Giving children with disabilities the devices to function in and around their homes as well as putting children with disabilities in school: integrate to educate - itesl8 - summaryweb   If you like to donate please make sure you communicate the program code: ITESL8
