Goodbye 2011 - Welcome 2012

thumb_2011_into_2012It is hard to believe that 2012 is really here. A new year, a new start, with new desires, hopes, dreams and wishes…Yet serving the same God, the One who created and gives hope for the future, who wants to take us by the hand and guide us step by step.

2012 Get ready!

From 30 Celsius to -3 Celsius within hours
thumb_denver_christmasDecember 23, 2011 We made it, we arrived in Colorado where we will spend the holidays with our son and his family. So thankful for this opportunity. Of course we would have loved it if we could have all our kids and grandchildren around us during this time. The first morning here we woke up to 12 inches (about 30cm) of snow. Beautiful but cold. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and what I want more then anything else is to enjoy a great Christmas service, where everything will be centered around the One who came and gave. I will never understand the dept of His giving, yet I am so thankful I can give Him my heart. Our wish to you for this season is that you will find time to reflect on the reason for the season, May we all be reminded once again that it is Not about opening our presents but that it is ALL about opening our hearts.  Merry Christmas.

Living our life a day at the time, as if we don’t know if there will be a tomorrow...

thumb_img_0094Thursday November 24, 2011 Once again we are confronted with how fragile life as we know it is. It is hard to believe that just a week ago while driving to the village we came upon an accident right at the turn off to the village. A crowd already developed around the accident site; all we could see was a big Mack truck, some motorcycles and lots of people.

We stopped less than 100 yards from the corner at the Mellier school where we are also working. One of the other community leaders from the village stopped us and told us Madame Joseph was in the accident and died.

We later learned 3 motorcycle taxies were involved with 2 drivers injured. Apparently an oncoming trailer/truck was passing slower traffic and was in the lane of the blue Mack truck which swerved to the right to avoid a head on collision. The blue Mack hit Mme Joseph who was just getting off the motorcycle. She must have been killed instantaneously and ended up face down in the ditch with the truck suspended over her.

Joseph was called while he was teaching in school. He arrived at a chaotic scene with over 100 people milling around. Sri Lankan UN peace keepers were there and later UN police, most of them from West Africa. Finally local police and officials showed up. Rene did get to translate for the Sri Lankans and for the most part tried to be there for Joseph.

Later we were back in the village where family and friends started

We Are back in Haiti

thumb_palaceNovember 3, 2011; Yes – we made it to Haiti and have been involved with all kinds of things, getting back into living and reaching out here. Our motto of: “Take a day at the time”, continues to follow us; we should not be surprised when things go a bit different than planned. Yet we are at peace and believe God is in this adventure with us.

Moving into our team house in Leogane is delayed and we are thankful for another ministry, local partners here in Haiti, for opening their hearts and guesthouse to us. It is great facility and we feel very fortunate. We trust that soon we will be able to move into the Hope Force team house in

Update #135 We ran our races

thumb_rene_marianne_run_waterfrontOctober 17, 2011 We live in eventful times. Many parts of the world are in crisis and conflict. In our lives, we made a major move in joining Hope Force International (HFI). We worked with HFI in relief efforts after several devastating tornadoes in Harvest, AL, Chattanooga, TN and Joplin, MO.

From August 21 we worked six weeks in Haiti, our new place of ministry. We represent the “boots on the ground” in the least developed, poorest country in the Americas and the Caribbean. The earthquake of January 12, 2010 cost an estimated 220,000 lives and made 1,5 million people homeless; approximately 650,000 still live in tent cities; cholera has claimed 6,300 lives in the past year.

Feedback Marathon Zeeland
thumb_kustmarathon2011-medalsOctober 17, 2010  Holland has come and gone and we had 13 wonderful, busy days.  The day we arrived we hit the ground running as I, Marianne ran the 10 kilometer race within 5 hours of arriving in the country. I have to be honest and the thought went through my mind.  And WHY are you doing this??? My body was tired and my time 3 minutes slower then I would have liked to finish with but realizing I had not slept for 30 + hours I was happy I finished with 57.59 min. Rene ran on Saturday Oct 1st and did well. It was a very hot day for the Netherlands  27 Celsius - having trained in Haiti the heat was something we could manage :) - but the dunes and the beach, especially the loose sand - was a challenge. Yet he finished with 5.04.15  hour. We proudly show you our medals.
